Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder..

The old saying is “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”, if this is true then you dear reader must love me a very much by now. Its been quite a while, in which time I found lots of things to do and lots of things were found for me to do by “She who must be obeyed” as Rumpole of The Bailey would say. Younger readers can Google Rumpole if you don’t know who or what I am talking about.

I am unable tell you exactly what I have been doing to take up so much of my time, things too numerous to mention, but nothing worth writing about obviously or was it that there was just not enough time?

I have spent a lot time with photography, both taking photographs, going through all my photos that are taking up space on my various storage discs to make some space. I sold three lenses and bought one that I really ‘needed’. I have also been trying out various new techniques as I go along.

I had noticed in various viewings on YouTube by the experts that drone photography is coming to the fore now. Especially valuable for those hard to reach shots. You don’t have to climb Ben Nevis anymore to get a view of or from the top you can actually do it while sitting in your car in theory. However that would be illegal as your drone has to always be visible to you, apparently.

So, I bought a drone. A small one but very powerful. It is a DJI Mini3 Pro which is very highly rated performance wise. It is 249 grams in weight which allows it to neatly fit into the under 250 gram category. This means it is not regulated as much as the larger ones. It has a tiny gimbal mounted camera on it that is capable of taking 48mp RAW images, bigger than my Canon 5D, automatic exposure grouping, panoramas and also 12mp jpeg pictures and 4K HD Video. There are numerous other photographic and video options but I haven’t fully explored them all yet.

I have only had it a few days but I have attached a picture taken on my second flight on my first day. It is a .jpg picture of Olney, my home town. I haven’t taken any videos yet as I am still mastering the art of flying and the skills for a smooth flight, despite the gimbal.

Olney Church featuring the allotments and some very dry and parched fields. The foreground is actually part of the recreation ground. You will note that there are no local mountains, hardly any hills either.

I did have to take a CAA test before I could legally fly and also register to get a number to attach to the drone. The online test for this type of drone is not too rigorous and you can have as many goes as you like and also refer to the regulations as you go. Just my kind of examination.

Its been good meeting you all again, we must do it again soon…
